The street is your home

The Challenge

Hogar Padre Venard, a center for homeless people, had seen a decrease in volunteer participation. Volunteers donate their time to assist on the daily services offered in the center, thus making their participation an integral part of the operation.

The Solution
Turn the street into a home by bringing an element tipically seen at the entrance of a residence; a welcom mat. An actual welcome mat has printed with the massage "Welcome to the harsh reality of those who call the street their home" and places where homeless people were doing things associated with house living, such as eating and sleeping.

The Results
Not only was a marked increase in volunteer participation reported, but monetary and clothing donations also rose.

Hogar Padre Venard opened Las Duchas (the showers) on 4 Oct 2001. Ever since then Las Duchas have received between 30 and 40 homeless every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:30 till 12:30 and sometimes later.
Las Duchas are staffed entirely by volunteers (the lady in charge is 70 years old, the youngest volunteer is 21) and supported by donations of money, clothes, food, medicine.
Las Duchas are known pretty much through word of mouth and it keeps on going.
The ad campaign you mention seems to be much more famous on-line than in Viejo San Juan where Hogar Padre Venard is and La Perla where Las Duchas are.
When you happen to come to Viejo San Juan in Puerto Rico, ask any homeless where Las Duchas are and s/he will tell you :-))))
